First
Christian Church was organized in Sedgwick, Kansas, after a four week
meeting in Congdon's Opera House held by J. H. Fuller on February 23,
1896, with 34 charter members. The first Church building was donated
by the Darlington Church members with the stipulation that the Sedgwick
members would assist in moving the actual building. The building was
dedicated on May 1, 1896 by Bro. G. T. Grobarger. The first pastor
was J. H. Fuller. The original structure was remodeled in 1907 but
following a highly successful revival in 1911, during which the Church
could not accommodate the crowds, plans were begun to build a new and
larger building. A new brick building was dedicated on February 16,
1913. In 1978, the Church membership voted to construct a new
building - the third Christian Church to set on the corner of Sixth Street
and Franklin in Sedgwick. Dedication was held on August 26,
1979. |

The
Congregationalists have the distinction of having the first Church in
Sedgwick. The seats were planks placed on kegs and the pulpit was a
board balanced on an empty lime barrel. On June 8, 1876 three
Chicago men donated a lot on 8th Street for a parsonage. On December
8, 1912 the last meeting was held in the old Church. On Saturday
evening and all day Sunday, December 22, the services for the dedication
of the new Church were held. |

We
don't have all the answers. But we know who does.
Life in the 21st Century has
taken us away from community, from each other, and too often, from
God. The paradox is the less time we have for God the more we need
Him.
The people of Sedgwick United
Methodist Church believe that God made the world, that He made us to live
in it, and that as the supreme expression of His love He offers us eternal
life through His Son Jesus Christ. We get together as often as we
can each week with our friends and fellow believers to seek His guidance
in dealing with the problems we face in this world, and to take comfort in
His ultimate control and amazing grace.
Our church family includes people
of all ages and lifestyles - young and old, divorced parents and families
with children, singles and couples, lifelong members and visitors just
like you. We invite you to join us, whether you choose to make this
your church home or simply to stop in for a Wednesday evening F5 program
or Sunday morning service.
We're here for each other, we're
here for God, and God is here for us. He's here for you too. |

The
United Methodist Church was incorporated October 22, 1875. The
Methodists bought the old McClung Hotel and fitted it for a Church.
When this was found to be unsatisfactory the small brick schoolhouse was
rented for a Church on Sundays. A new Church was built and dedicated
in 1879 on the present site, Commercial and Sixth Street. This
building was sold in April of 1913. On May 13, 1913, ground was
broken for the present building. In April of 1968, the United
Methodist Church became a reality unification of the Evangelical United
Brethren Church and the Methodist Church.
